The Wonderful Grace of Jesus

Do you know this hymn?  More importantly, do these words resonate with you?

Wonderful grace of Jesus,
Greater than all my sin;
How shall my tongue describe it,
Where shall its praise begin?
Taking away my burden,
Setting my spirit free;
For the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.

Refrain
Wonderful the matchless grace of Jesus,
Deeper than the mighty rolling sea;
Wonderful grace, all sufficient for me, for even me.
Broader than the scope of my transgressions,
Greater far than all my sin and shame,
O magnify the precious Name of Jesus.
Praise His Name!

Wonderful grace of Jesus,
Reaching to all the lost,
By it I have been pardoned,
Saved to the uttermost,
Chains have been torn asunder,
Giving me liberty;
For the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.
Refrain

Wonderful grace of Jesus,
Reaching the most defiled,
By its transforming power,
Making him God’s dear child,
Purchasing peace and heaven,
For all eternity;
And the wonderful grace of Jesus reaches me.

I don't know how many times I heard this hymn as a child.  I liked the bass line in the chorus, and it was a nice, peppy song.  But the words never really struck me.  And I don't think they do automatically strike a chord unless you have been changed by the grace of Jesus.  Unless we realize the fullness of the wonderful grace of Jesus, singing songs like this won't make that much sense.  I pray that you know this grace to the fullest and your heart can join in singing of the wonderful, matchless, overwhelming, life-changing, powerful, eternal grace of Jesus.

  1. The words of this song do bring back wonderful memories about the first time I heard it in Hayward Wiscomsin around the 1960s. A mixed quartet sang the song and it brought peace into my teen age soul. Your writing renewed my appreciation of the song and the life-changing grace of Jesus.
